A focal skeletal disorder characterized by bone remodeling of rapid king (usually of pelvis, skull, femur and spine), leading to bone pain, deformities, fractures and pressure features. Is usually a disease of the over 40s. serum calcium and phosphorous are normal, but there is a pronounced increased in levels of alkaline phosphatase. Bone x-rays are diagnostic showing expanded appearance, increased density, and fissure fractures in the long bones.
Treatment
Most patients are asymptomatic, but the symptomatic need active therapy. Salmon calcitonins, 50 IU SC or IM times weekly to 100 IV daily for 1-6 months. Quick relief of pain obtains, btu the progress of disease is not halted. Nasal spray form is available as well. Biphosphonates are the mainstay of to normal. The effectiveness of therapy is gauged by monitoring the enzyme levels. Alendromate, 40mg/day orally before breakfast for months, or Risedroate 30mg/day for 3 months in the usual course of thepray. Increase in alkaline phosphatase levels might call for repeat course
